Chene Bleu~A New Vision of Sustainable Hospitality and Stewardship

Chêne Bleu~A New Vision of Sustainable Hospitality and Stewardship

by Marci Moreau

The prevailing spirit of our time is a resounding call for sustainability, a philosophy that lies at the heart of Chêne Bleu’s mission. In an era where the zeitgeist of environmental stewardship and conscious living is more essential than ever,  Chêne Bleu exemplifies a harmonious blend of innovation, tradition, and ecological responsibility, setting a benchmark for what it means to create with care for both the planet and future generations, an elevated and purposeful standard of sustainability.

Resembling a scene from a whimsical tale, perch on a secluded mountaintop in the Vaucluse region of Provence, Chêne Bleu is not just a vineyard; it is a sanctuary where history, nature, sustainability, and hospitality seamlessly intertwine.  At the heart of the estate stands La Verrière, a beautifully restored medieval priory that offers more than just a place to stay. This fully renovated thousand-year-old architectural gem combines medieval origins with modern luxury, providing guests with the highest standards of comfort within a setting unlike any other. The priory’s unique blend of history and cutting-edge design creates an unforgettable atmosphere where the past is preserved yet every modern convenience is at your fingertips.

Nicole and Xavier Rolet, the driving forces behind Chêne Bleu, embody the values that define the estate philosophy. With a deep commitment to the land, the world, and the future, they are real-life ecological stewards, living by their motto: Non mihi, non tibi, sed nobis— not mine, not yours, but ours.

With guiding principles that reflect their unwavering belief in the importance of collective responsibility, Nicole and Xavier approach every endeavor with passion and determination, striving to create something that transcends individual achievement and creates a better world.

At Chêne Bleu, they are doing just that—and have been for quite some time.

When Nicole and Xavier Rolet met in 1994, Xavier had already acquired the property—a site steeped in history but resembling an ambitious archaeological excavation, with layers of the past waiting to be uncovered. Initially, the tangled vines, ruins, and relics were concerning to Nicole, to say the least. However, her belief in sustainability and the potential to breathe new life—and love—into the land sparked her intrigue, and the rest is history.

Like any great work of art, they have created a transformative force for the environment through a blend of passion, vision, skill, and, of course, fortitude. At Chêne Bleu, regenerative practices, ancient craftsmanship, and cutting-edge sustainability converge to create a model of ecological harmony—all while preserving the cultural heritage of Provence and extending their influence well beyond.

The vineyard and La Verrière estate operate today using the greenest and most organic methods available. Without relying on synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, the focus is on regenerative agriculture. Their SustainaBEElity program incorporates bees, composting, soil preservation, redirecting water waste to a bamboo forest, and growing their own food while sourcing locally.

It is through these innovative guiding principles and practices that they have created a harmonious ecosystem where flora and fauna thrive together, immersing guests in a world where sustainability is seamlessly integrated into every aspect of their visit.

Whether it is a vineyard experience at Chêne Bleu or a stay at La Verrière, they cultivate an environmentally responsible, sustainable hospitality experience that goes beyond exceptional service. Guests are not only welcomed with warmth and care but are also invited to be part of a sustainable journey, where every detail offers a personalized, thoughtful experience reflecting their commitment to ecological stewardship. It is a place where sustainability is not just a practice but an essential part of the rich, unforgettable hospitality experience—leaving guests feeling connected to the land and inspired by a brighter future.

As the Rolets take on the challenges of modern viticulture and environmental conservation, they do so with a vision that extends beyond personal success, focusing instead on leaving a lasting legacy. It comes as no surprise that they are bringing their message to the global stage. Nicole and Xavier, now Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellows at Harvard University, are expanding their focus to include innovative leadership in sustainability, social impact, and environmental responsibility. By integrating their experiences from Chêne Bleu with broader initiatives, they inspire new ways to address pressing global challenges.

Every aspect of the Rolets' work—from the restoration of their thousand-year-old property to the cultivation of their wines—is a deliberate step toward fostering a healthier planet and a more socially conscious world. Through their unwavering commitment to sustainability, they are proving that luxury, history, and environmental stewardship can not only coexist but thrive together. Their work sets a very powerful example for others to follow, and I am certain the world will be a much better place because of them.
